On Thursday, the famously private Pirates of the Caribbean star stepped out for a cocktail party hosted by Chanel in Paris, in a phenomenal Grecian-inspired dress that hid no secrets.

With a hand cradled protectively over her rounded tum, the British star made her way past the slew of photographers and guests at the event.

This will make the 34-year-old star and her rocker husband, Righton parents of two little ones, as the baby joins big sister, three-year-old Edie.

Knightley and Righton are no strangers to France. In fact it is a happy place for the couple, who were married in a low-key wedding in front of just 11 people in the town hall of the hilltop village of Mazan in Provence back in 2013.

Knightley has spoken candidly about the realities of motherhood, calling out reporters for asking sexist questions on the red carpet and even having a dig at the royal family – you can read more on that below.

But it’s the questions about the impact motherhood has had on her acting career that draw the most ire from the feminist star.

“There’s that sense of, like, I don’t give a f–k,” Knightley has previously joked to Harper’s Bazaar.

“Once you’ve had that whole experience of leaking breasts everywhere and the messiness of it – there’s no control, it’s animalistic. I feel that in a funny way with acting it sort of helps; there is no embarrassment any more.”

With a royal birth imminent, we can be sure pregnant Knightley will be keeping a close eye on how it all pans out in the media.

In October last year Knightley caused a stir when she penned a powerful essay titled, ‘The Weaker Sex’, in which she called out Duchess Catherine for setting unrealistic expectations on women who have just given birth.

In the essay, Knightley recalls seeing images of Kate leaving the hospital after the birth of Princess Charlotte in 2015, which was just a day after she had given birth to her own daughter.

She wrote: “Seven hours after your fight with life and death, seven hours after your body breaks open, and bloody, screaming life comes out. Don’t show. Don’t tell. Stand there with your girl and be shot by a pack of male photographers.”

“Hide. Hide our pain, our bodies splitting, our breasts leaking, our hormones raging. Look beautiful. Look stylish, don’t show your battleground, Kate.”

The essay, which Knightley dedicated to her daughter, Edie Righton, went into graphic detail about the realities of birth.

“My vagina split,” she states. “You came out with your eyes open. Arms up in the air. Screaming. They put you on to me, covered in blood, vernix, your head misshapen from the birth canal. Pulsating, gasping, screaming.”

“I remember the s**t, the vomit, the blood, the stitches. I remember my battleground. Your battleground and life pulsating. Surviving. And I am the weaker sex? You are?”

But it wasn’t just Kate that Knightley hit out against in her poignant essay – she also relayed her frustration around double standards for actors and actresses who are parents.

She wrote: “My male colleagues can be late, can not know their lines,” she said.

“They can shout and scream and throw things. They can turn up drunk or not turn up at all. They don’t see their children. They’re working. They need to concentrate.”

This is one mum-to-be who won’t be standing for any nonsense, that’s for sure!
