Of course, it’s coming from a place of love. Your in-laws adore their new grandchild and they can’t resist covering him in kisses. But, please could they not?
Since newborns have immature immune systems and haven’t been fully vaccinated yet, every effort should be made to minimise their contact with bacteria and viruses that cause diseases.
There are cases, where babies have become seriously ill or died from a disease passed to them from a kiss.
Asking your in-laws to keep their lips off your child can be a delicate topic but your bub’s wellbeing is your number one priority.
So ask politely, be firm and stick to your guns. Explain that your request for them to refrain from kissing their grandchild isn’t one that will last forever, just until they are older and their immune system is stronger.
Everyone who comes into contact with your baby should follow safe hygiene practices. These include, washing hands and of course, not kissing them – especially on the lips, face or hands which often go into their mouths.

Here are five tips for dealing with intrusive in-laws:
1. Be firm
You and your husband are the parents and you have the final say on the upbringing of your child. And if you don’t want them kissing your little one, they really need to respect your wishes.
2. It’s ok if your in-laws don’t agree with you or are upset with you
Disagreements happen and it doesn’t signal the end of the world. You are their parent so you have nothing to feel guilty about.
3. Be gracious and respectful of your in-laws without bowing down to them
If they give unwanted advice, kindly thank them for it but tell them you and your husband and doing it your way.
4. Unite as a couple
Support your hubby’s relationship with his parents and ask that he supports you too.
5. Take a deep breath
Finally, when your in-laws are driving you nuts, take a deep breath and remember these words of wisdom: “You don’t just marry a person; you marry his or her family.”
