Drew Barrymore has a very important message to pass on. The actress recently took to social media with an inspiring post about her adjustment to life as a newly single mother following her divorce from husband Will Kopelman.
Besides a snap of her dining alone with a magazine, the star wrote: “Ok I know this is going to seem silly, but I want to be always happy just being by myself too.”
She went on: “Ok to be alone. Never lonely. So I grabbed myself, and went to lunch with a magazine and I could not be more happy to steal this rare and treasured moment.”
Signing off with an important lesson, the mother of Olive, four, and Frankie, two, wrote: “You are your own best friend sometimes.”
The touching social media message isn’t the first time the star has spoken out about putting herself first.
In her book Wildflower, she expressed her mind’s inner workings on human nature’s fear of being alone.
“It’s ironic that we rush through being single as if it’s some disease or malady to get rid of or overcome. The truth is, most likely, one day you will meet someone and it will be gone.
“And once it’s gone, it’s really gone! Why does no one tell us how important it is to enjoy being single and being by yourself? That time is defining and amazing and nothing to ‘cure.’”
In a 2010 interview with The Guardian, Drew admitted that she deemed herself “very good” when it came to being her own best friend.
“There’s a tremendous difference between alone and lonely. You could be lonely in a group of people. I like being alone. I like eating by myself.
“I go home at night and just watch a movie or hang out with my dog. I have to exert myself and really say, oh God, I’ve got to see my friends cos I’m too content being by myself.”
Back in July, the actress officially filed papers to divorce her third husband. The legal move came three months after the couple first announced their plans to go their separate ways.
“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family,” the couple shared in a joint statement.
“Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on. Our children are our universe and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.”
The former spouses, who were married for four years, share two daughters.
Speaking recently to Entertainment Tonight, she revealed her secret to making co-parenting work.
“I think plans. Constant plans,” she quipped on the red carpet at the Once Upon A Time Gala in Los Angeles on October 15.
“You just… you, I don’t know, you just be a family! Families are many different definitions in this day and age.”
