As a young Aussie mum prepares to face court today, answering to charges for failing to provide for her child/cause danger of death, her estranged father has opened up about what could have driven his daughter to neglect her baby boy.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the claims come after this mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged by police after her four-month-old son was found in an emaciated state, “seriously malnourished and suffering from neglect” at his home in Lavington, Albury, New South Wales.
Police were called to the home where the little boy, along with his brother and sister, lived with their mother, in response to a domestic violence incident.
When police entered the home, they found the three children, and called paramedics to treat the malnourished baby.
“I knew she was on it, I’d go down there sometimes and see a pipe, it was pretty obvious,” the woman ‘s father claims, adding that he didn’t have much contact with the 22-year-old “lost soul”.
“I knew there were drugs going on, obviously this thing just got way too powerful for her.”
The woman’s father, himself, confesses he has used amphetamines in the past, and is now worried what will happen to his grandchildren, who are now with Family and Community Services.
“I can’t encapsulate the way I feel about what it is doing to the kids.”
According to the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, methamphetamine use has tripled in the last five years.
