Mothers and their daughters may bicker from time to time, but there’s no denying that it’s usually out of love. After all, mums and daughters certainly share a strong bond. Now, science is saying that the mother-daughter bond may be the strongest possible one.
In a recent study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, researchers attempted to work out why certain mood disorders were passed down from mothers to daughters. Their findings were fascinating: Apparently, mothers and daughters share a certain structure of the brain that regulates emotions.
“This association was significantly greater than mother-son, father-daughter, and father-son associations,” researchers said.
No wonder why daughters often relate to their moms when it comes to emotions…
Scroll down for more reasons why we think Mum will always be your best friend.
1. She wants what’s best for you
Unfortunately, we can’t say this about everyone in our lives. But if you know your mum genuinely has your best interests at heart, do you really need anyone else to fill that role?
2. She’s always there for you whenever you need her
No matter what time of day (or night) it is, you know you can always depend on your mother to have your back in a sticky situation. And if your mum has already passed on, you know how much you miss being able to turn to her whenever you’re in a pinch.
3. She’s made sacrifices for you that no one else will.
You don’t see anyone else volunteering to house you in their tummy for nine whole months, do you? It sometimes takes a long time for it to truly sink in how much our mothers have done for us. But once we realise it, we never forget all those precious memories.
4. She’s not going to sugarcoat anything for you — except maybe your coffee
This, of course, is a common reason why moms and daughters don’t always see eye-to-eye on a lot of things. But give it some time, and you’ll see mum’s gut instinct is (usually) right. Don’t you remember all the times you didn’t ask for your mother’s opinion, and she still gave you one that helped you in the long run?
5. She never gives you bad advice.
Unlike some of our friends, our mums have experienced life and have the wisdom to pass down knowledge to the best of their ability.
Trust her: She knows what she’s talking about for a reason. Those among us who no longer have our mothers wish we could ask for advice during a quick phone call or a short home visit again.
6. She sometimes doubles as a conscience.
Let’s face it, we all have tough decisions to make in life. And when we’re about to do something we know our mums wouldn’t be proud of, it always makes us think twice, doesn’t it? She’s always watching, even when she isn’t.
7. She’ll love you no matter what.
Even when you mess up big-time, mum is always the one to say, “You know what? I still love you.” At the end of the day, sometimes that’s really all you need to hear. If you’re still lucky enough to have your mother around, remember that some of us would give everything to hear those words again.
