We don’t buy into the fact that ageing is something to fight against or to be avoided — it happens, and with it comes many good things!
However, there is one scary statistic about getting older that all Australian women (and men) should be mindful of.
Single elderly women, aged 60 or over, are the lowest income earning group in Australia making poverty a very real risk factor for women later in life. The number of older homeless women nationally has increased by 31 per cent in recent years.
These stats highlight the importance of being financially literate at all ages, but particularly in your fifties and beyond.
If you’re reading this thinking ‘I could do with polishing up my money smarts and investing knowledge,’ you’re in luck.
The Australian Shareholders Association is hosting a series of free finance workshops across New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia for women aged over 55.
The aim is to empower women and ensure you have a handle on financial terminology and investments so that you can make informed decisions about your money.
It may be that you’re newly single and feel out of touch with your personal finances, or you may be the main accountant in the household and just want a refresher and a friendly chat about finance with some new faces. Either way, the workshops are FREE and ultimately priceless.
