Lisa began her career journey growing up in the Sydney suburb of Campbelltown. A self-confessed “magazine junkie” she would spend her spare cash on women’s magazines, daydreaming of one day working in the media.

At the age of 19, her dreams began to take shape when she applied for a job at DOLLY Magazine. Two years later she was promoted to the role of editor – making her the youngest magazine editor in Australia.

“I knew straight away I’d found my passion,” says Lisa.

After appearing on a range of TV shows – from Foxtel’s Beauty and the Beast to Seven’s The Morning Shift – Lisa finally got her ‘big break’ in 2007 when she became the new co-host of the Nine Network’s Today Show with Karl Stefanovic.

“I always come from an incredible place of gratitude,” said Lisa.

In the below clip, Deborah Hutton asks Lisa what she has learnt about herself throughout her extensive career.

“I discovered that I should listen to my inner voice. That I should trust myself,” said Lisa.

During the early days at the magazine, having that “very strong” intuitive voice gave Lisa an understanding of who to trust and what would appeal to the magazine readers.

Understanding the audience has always been important to Lisa who still finds herself asking “what I would I think about this if I was listening or watching or reading, or what’s the heart of this that makes me connect with this story?”

Deborah then presses Lisa about what makes people (women in particular) doubt themselves and their abilities and asks what they should do to “get over that bridge.”

In answering the question, Lisa recounts her time at school being bullied and what she did afterwards to start a new phase of her life.

“When I left school I really wanted to rewrite my version of who I was,” said Lisa.
