‘Tis the season to get together, eat ham, sing a bunch of songs you don’t remember when it was that you learnt the lyrics off by heart and rock your festive best come Christmas day.
And no-one got the dressed-to-impress memo more than Sunrise co-host David ‘Kochie’ Koch, who rocked a Christmas bush-inspired jacket for Carols in the Domain last night – a jacket that costs $16,500.
And look, Kochie looked appropriately festive in his snazzy jacket, but it’s the social media gush fest accompanying it that has me eye-rolling for days.
“The boys set for Woolworths Carols in the Domain,” he tweeted. “Thanks Joe Bananas Australia for the incredible jacket. Very special.”
The jacket love continued in a second post…
“For those who are interested Joe Bananas Australia, whose jacket I’m wearing, is an Australian business which has been going 30 years. It’s such a great success story in a really tough industry.”
“Their secret is to be creative and unique. Their clothes are like a piece of art.”
(Please note: Kochie posted more about this jacket than he did about what he calls “one of my favourite events of the year” – the Carols evening, itself.)
Joe Bananas Australia was quick to feel/share the love for this jacket.
“We were absolutely honoured to have Australian television icon, David Koch, wearing our iconic ‘Euphoria’ Art Series jacket on Channel 7’s Woolworths Carols in the Domain last night.”
“Think you’ll agree, he looks every part the Banana man. Great night. Top bloke. Well done Kochie and team.”
Look, we’re all about supporting small businesses, as well as talented local artisans, creatives and fashion designers, but to be honest, we think they’re missing the point; call me crazy, but isn’t Christmas about bringing people together – and not about a jacket that’s priced at three times the amount of my car?
Earlier this year, research conducted by the Centre for Social Impact revealed that more than two million Australians are living under severe financial stress – something that is only exasperated at this time of year.
So when it comes to an event like Carols in the Domain, what’s important? The fact that all Sydneysiders have the opportunity to enjoy this free Christmas event with their families, regardless of what their bank account looks like.
And that is what is “very special” here.
