When you picture a hostel, you probably imagine a collection of crowded, noisy dorm rooms with young, overexcited travellers loudly entering and exiting at all hours of the day and night.
Well, you’re going to need to rethink that outdated image, because these Japanese hostels are perfect for people of any age hoping to get an authentic Japanese experience on a budget.
From private rooms overlooking the city, futuristic rooms where everything is controlled by a single remote – to private rooms with authentic Japanese futons; there is no better way to visit Japan.
Thanks to some help from HostelWorld, here are 5 of the best hostels to visit in Japan, no matter your age.
In Tokyo
&And Hostel Akihabara
One of the most central and welcoming hostels available in the very central Akihabara area.
It’s Japan`s first Smart Hostel provides affordable private rooms that are a mere 5-minute walk from Akihabara station, and it’s only 5 minutes by train to Tokyo station. Great news for travellers who want to do some serious exploring, if you can bring yourself to leave your room that is.
While there are share rooms available for those who want them, a more seasoned traveller would no doubt prefer the private rooms, equipped with the sort of easy to use smart home technology that will leave you feeling like you’ve been teleported to the future.
A single easy to use remote allows you to interact with a Google home device, control various types of lighting, your tv, the blinds, your window – basically anything that’s in the room.
You’ll share bathroom facilities with others on your floor, but don’t worry – they’re clean, warm and private. The getting to play with the smart home technology is just the cherry on top of an amazing experience, with warm, English speaking staff who are ready and able to help you get the most of your journey through the city.

Unplan Kagurazaka
This hostel could be my personal favourite in Tokyo. Located in the heart of the tourist-friendly Kagurazaka district, the private rooms here are as larger than most, with a private bathroom and a balcony overlooking neighbouring rooftops.
Unplan is a short walk from the Metro, which is extremely simple to use and can take you most places in Tokyo quickly and easily. You won’t be at a loss to entertain yourself in the Kagurazaka district, however, the place is filled with delicious cafes, traditional eateries and scenic walk. The hostel is attached to a cafe, which makes excellent coffee and provides a free breakfast of eggs and toast to guests.
The staff speak excellent English and are more than willing to help travellers make the best of their trip to Japan.
Don’t miss out on the hostel’s rooftop, which is a great place to have a quiet drink and watch the sunset.

The Wise Owl Hostels
You can’t get more central than The Wise Owl Hostel!
The multi-story building is perfect for all those travelling night owls who just want a place to sleep and safely leave their things while they explore the city day and night.
Though small, the private rooms are wonderfully set up to accommodate one or two travellers, with an in-room sink and plenty of power outlets and storage space.
The hostel has a spacious common room and kitchen, for those who wish to dine in one a budget or socialise with other travellers, and the shared bathroom facilities are also very clean and roomy.
The staff speak excellent English and are some of the warmest and most welcoming people you’ll come across in Japan – not to mention their general manager is an actual, real-life owl who sits by the front desk of an evening.
The best bit? You’re just a stone’s throw away from the Metro and less than a 20-minute walk to Tokyo central station, which means you can readily travel just about anywhere in Japan, making it perfect for anyone planning a few day trips.
