If you saved your old mason jars, a lot of money could come your way

Old Mason jars are just one of the internet’s best-kept secret gold mines.

If you’re anything like us, you can’t get enough of old Mason jars. There’s no question about their practicality and beauty, not to mention the endless variety of uses. You can use Mason jars for drinks, meals, DIY projects, making $1,000 in one sitting… wait, what was that last example?!

Old Mason jars are just one of the internet’s best-kept secret gold mines. And how good is this gold? Well, just take a look at the vintage ball blue quart Mason jar selling for $1,000 on eBay. And the vintage amber fruit Mason jar selling for $500 on the same site.

There’s also a couple of other old Mason jars out there in seriously high demand — and seriously low supply. In other words, ka-ching, ka-ching for you if you happen to have one at home! One great example is the ultra-rare upside-down ball Mason jar. The glassware piece that could double as a dispenser for a coffee grinder was only issued from 1900 to 1910. It’s worth today is $1,000.

Anyone who’s a fan of happy mistakes can be appreciative of the fact that an old Mason jar once considered an “error” is among these valuable items today. The infamous violet Columbia Mason jar developed a purple tint when exposed to the sun, a result of manganese added to the jars. But people were such fans that manufacturers began actually selling it in that shade — purposefully — in 1905. Considering it’s worth $400 today, it looks like they made a smart choice.

So, in short, if you want to get rich off your old Mason jars, here’s what to look for:

Make sure it’s actually considered “old” in the Mason jar world. The further back in years from when it was created, the better. (Hint: Mason jars were first invented in 1858.)

Find out if your piece is a rare one. If it was only available for a short period of time, this is a great clue.

Inspect its condition. Buyers today expect mint and rarely less than that!
