As we all know, this sometimes involves a little bit (or a lot) of housekeeping to make your house look attractive to prospective buyers. As it turns out, the most effective way to add value to your home might be to do one big paint job — in one specific color.
Victoria Gimson, design director and founder of Decorum Interior Design, told Mail Online that she personally thinks there’s only one color that can add thousands of dollars to a home’s value — ivory.
“Ivory acts as a blank canvas to furniture, artwork and accessories and automatically creates a feeling of space so buyers will feel as though they are getting more for their money,” Gimson says.
Hmm, we see her point! After all, if and when we buy a new home, we want to have maximum freedom to decorate it the way we see fit, without feeling pressured to make our furniture or carpeting match a bright or bold paint color (pretty as it might be).
Plus, who wants to have a new paint job as the first item on the to-do list after moving into a new space? Certainly not us!
Along with ivory being a blank slate, Gimson also says that the color is classic and timeless. Clean and simple, it gives off the vibe to prospective buyers of a home that is well-maintained. That’s why she believes this color has the power to make your home look more expensive.
We don’t know about you, but we know what color we’re painting every room in our house — and maybe the outside of it, too, for good measure! — before we ever put it on the market.
