Australia in summer is hot. Very, very hot. And if we’re not careful, being out in intense heat can wreck havoc on our bodies.
Heatstroke is a serious condition caused by the body overheating that needs to be treated by medical staff immediately.
If your temperature is above 40 degrees Celsius, call 000.
If your temperature is between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius and you are sweating, you are likely suffering from heat exhaustion.
If you’re suffering from heat exhaustion, or are waiting for medical assistance for heat stroke, move out of the sun and into the shade or an air-conditioned room. Remove any unnecessary clothing.
Sponge your body with a wet cloth, cover your body with a damp sheet or use a spray bottle to spray your body with cold water.
Apply ice packs under your armpits, on your neck, and on the groin. These areas contain bloody vessels that are very close to the skin, and applying ice here can help the body cool down more quickly.
If you are able, have a cold shower or bath. If you are outdoors, a pool or hose can help cool you.
SLOWLY sip on a sports drink if you have it, or regular water. Do not drink energy or soft drinks.
To prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke, make sure to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.
Avoid the outdoors during the hottest hours of the day, and do not exert yourself when temperatures are very high.
Stick to loose-fitting, lightweight and light coloured clothing. Tight, dark clothing make it difficult for the body to cool itself down.
