Despite the realities our bank balance may command, we can’t help but wonder what sort of home $1million dollars could buy.

Around Australia, $1million dollars will buy you very different kinds of properties. In some cities, the inordinate number affords you crumbling squalor or what is known as a “renovators dream.”

In others, you’ll be looking through a mini-mansion with a backyard and sprawling bathroom.

Sadly, the latter is increasingly rare with the eye-watering average national house price steadily increasing.

As of December 31st, 2017 the average price of a Sydney home was listed as $895,324 according to Corelogic.

So it’s not surprising that the below for sale home made headlines for it’s outrageously derelict quality and shockingly high price.

The dual level terrace located in Newtown in Sydney was in such a bad state people had to sign a waiver before they entered – but was still priced at $1million dollars.

Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane’s average home price is considerably lower than Sydney’s.

It may seem far away, but Perth is considered something of an oasis in the property market – simply because it’s one of the only capital city markets not in high demand.

The average cost of home in the Western Australian city is still huge at $841,000 for a home in the metro area.
