Despite the realities our bank balance may command, we can’t help but wonder what sort of home $1million dollars could buy.
Around Australia, $1million dollars will buy you very different kinds of properties. In some cities, the inordinate number affords you crumbling squalor or what is known as a “renovators dream.”
In others, you’ll be looking through a mini-mansion with a backyard and sprawling bathroom.
Sadly, the latter is increasingly rare with the eye-watering average national house price steadily increasing.

As of December 31st, 2017 the average price of a Sydney home was listed as $895,324 according to Corelogic.
So it’s not surprising that the below for sale home made headlines for it’s outrageously derelict quality and shockingly high price.
The dual level terrace located in Newtown in Sydney was in such a bad state people had to sign a waiver before they entered – but was still priced at $1million dollars.
Gulp.
Brisbane, Australia
Brisbane’s average home price is considerably lower than Sydney’s.
You’ll be looking at $491,391 as an estimated average, but here’s what you can get for $1million dollars.
This property is a brand new two bedroom two bathroom unit in Brisbane city with botanical views, PLUS access to a pool and fitness center.
When can we move in?
Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne is often on a par with Sydney real-estate prices, with the average cost of a home can be between $900,000 and $800,000.

Hobart, Australia
A home in beautiful Hobart will set you back $807,500 on average, and the metro area is considered a high demand market.

Perth, Australia
It may seem far away, but Perth is considered something of an oasis in the property market – simply because it’s one of the only capital city markets not in high demand.
The average cost of home in the Western Australian city is still huge at $841,000 for a home in the metro area.
The following Burswood home is priced at $1,188,000 for 4 bedrooms, three bathrooms and two car spaces. There’s also a a sizeable courtyard and the home is split over three levels.
Canberra, Australia
Canberra’s average house price reached over $700,000 for first time ever in April 2017. The cost of a buying a home in Canberra remains under $800,000, making it marginally cheaper than other capital cities around Australia.
