The coastal city is full of hidden gems for the family to enjoy, no matter your budget. Whether it be wildlife adventures, markets, beaches or incredible parks, the Gold Coast has some of the best free activities for kids of any holiday spot we’ve found.

We’re rounding up some of our favourite, cost-free activities to do with kids while holidaying, below.

Tallebudgera Creek

Framed by Burleigh Head National Park, Tallebudgera Creek’s sparkling, crystal clear waters are a sight to behold and a popular spot for local families. The idyllic location is a natural playground for the whole family with picnic areas, swimming, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing and even water sports.

In the vicinity, there are accommodation options for every budget from gorgeous camping grounds and basic lodges, to spacious apartments just a short walk away.

HOTA

HOTA (Home of the Arts) is an entire contemporary cultural precinct where art meets life.

Nestled amongst tropical parklands, HOTA offers live performances, lakeside strolls, stargazing, cinemas and art; the precinct sets the scene for conversation and new ideas.

There are a number of free and kid-orientated events to attend – including workshops and movies – which are updated regularly.

Broadwater Parklands

Consider this every kid’s wonderland. A monorail track circles the perimeter of the playground while the parkland itself boasts swings, slides, climbing equipment, a huge zip-line and seesaws, along with the ultimate crowd-favourite: a jumping pillow. If that’s not enough, there’s also a mini traffic track and a waterpark for warmer days.

Treetop Walk in Lamington National Park

A rainforest oasis awaits at the World Heritage Listed Lamington National Park. With over 320 kilometres of walking tracks leading you to stunning lookouts, waterfalls and wilderness areas, there’s plenty to explore. The highlight, however, has to be the magical treetop walk spanning 180 metres in length and hanging 15 metres above ground.

Currumbin Rock Pools

A secret favourite for locals, this is a shining example of wholesome family fun.

Located just 15 minutes from Currumbin Beach by car, this natural swimming spot will keep the kids occupied and exploring for hours, thanks to natural swimming pools with rope swings and sheltered picnic tables. With varying pool depths, there’s a spot to splash safely at every age.

Markets

If there’s one thing that the Gold Coast is not in short supply of it’s markets, markets and more markets!

With stalls brimming with fresh produce, fashions, eclectic gifts, toys and all sorts of exciting finds there’s sure to be something for everyone. Plus, many host a range of entertainers sure to thrill the kids.

The Village Markets are a bi-monthly pop-up market featuring jewellery, fashion and craft stalls from local entrepreneurs. Trust us, if you’re in the area, these markets are a must-see – they’re very popular with both locals and tourists alike.

The Burleigh Heads market is borderline famous and has been selling a unique mix of bric-a-brac, fashion and food for 30 years.

The Gold Coast even hosts a special market for kids, the Hide & Seek Children’s Market, on every fourth Saturday of the month with specialised stalls.

Beaches & Whale Watching

We probably don’t have to tell you the Gold Coast has some of the best beaches in the country. So why not make the most of them while you visit?

Between June and November, you may even be able to do some whale watching from some of the coastal lookouts along Greenmount, Kirra Hill or Elephant Rock at Currumbin Beach as the beautiful creatures make their migration journey. Pro tip: take a pocketful of change to Elephant Rock and make use of the coin-operated binoculars.
