March 5 is officially our new favourite day of the year, because it’s Pancake Day!
Also known as Shrove Tuesday, today is the day immediately preceding Ash Wednesday and it’s celebrated in many countries around the world by eating pancakes.
But why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? Well, it turns out there’s a Christian tradition to thank for it all.
It is a custom that is said to hark back to at least the 16th Century, when families had to use up stocks of eggs and butter before Lent, a 40-day period of fasting in the lead up to Easter.
Just as true today as it was then, there was no better way to do this than cooking up a big batch of pancakes and so, Shrove Tuesday was born.
So to honour this awesome tradition, we’ve found 20 delicious pancake recipes you can whip up for any meal of the day – no judgement!
