Do you remember Christmas? You know, the holiday with the presents and stuff? It feels like it was only days ago but that can’t be right. Why? Well, Easter’s greatest gift – hot cross buns – have already hit the shelves.
Christmas was so recent in fact, I’d be so bold as to assume you haven’t even taken down your tree yet, but that hasn’t stopped the big wigs packing the delicious, bready treats early.
Apparently, some people aren’t happy about the buns making an early appearance. This makes no sense due to the fact hot cross buns are delicious and should be sold all year round and I, for one, welcome the change.
Supermarket juggernaut Woolworths has no regrets about the early sale of the fruit buns, claiming they’re just giving the people what they want.
“We know many of our customers love getting delicious hot cross buns as soon as they can and we see high demand immediately when they hit our shelves — with 10 million hot cross buns sold just in January last year,” they said in a statement.
“Some of our in-store bakers have simply been perfecting their wares ahead of the official in-store launch next week.
“We are proud to share that customers can officially look forward to freshly baked hot cross buns in all Woolworths stores nationwide, with a brand new variety this year, from January 2.”
~~Only~~ Main supermarket rival Coles is coming late to the bakery hunger games, not releasing hot cross buns to the public until January 3rd – crazy. They are, however, upping the options stakes.
“Coles customers can choose from Traditional, made with 100 percent Australian fruit (regular or mini sized), Fruit Free, Chocolate, Apple and Cinnamon or Gluten Free.”
If this is any indication of how 2018 is going to go, I’m cheering… and will also probably gain 5kg by the time Easter comes around.
