Aldi’s cheap whiskey wins Double Gold award and is dubbed phenomenal by experts

“This whisky is phenomenal for its price."

You’d better get in fast and grab yourself one (or two) of Aldi’s Highland Black Eight-Year-Old Scotch Whiskey, if the rapid sellout of the award winning $6, St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon from Coles last month is anything to learn from.

Aldi’s “cheap” whiskey has taken out the internationally coveted Double Gold award due to its “good body, nice colour and soft finish” and its extremely affordable price point.

The fourth Melbourne International Spirits Competition took place this week. The competition is fierce with entries from all around the Pacific Region fighting for the top place.

Competition judge and founder, Adam Levy told news.com.au that the Aldi’s winning whiskey was a standout and “phenomenal for its price.”.

“For its price point [34.99 for 700ml] it’s a wonderful whisky to buy,” he said.

Based on the trade only focus of the competition, the spirits entered are judged alongside others of a similar retail price.

“At its price point, it compares to a good quality mass produced whisky,” said Levy.

“To get the double gold award, it means the spirit is in the top 10% of the whole competition.”

In May the same whiskey took out a silver award at the International Spirits Challenge, one of the most respected spirit competition in the world.

May was a great month for Aldi, with their $8 Rosé being named one of the best wines in the world.

Coles recent award winning wine sold out so quickly that many stores had to put up signs indicating it was impossible to buy the red at stores due to the popularity surge.

So if you want to get your hands on this award-winning Whiskey, we recommend getting yourself to Aldi ASAP.

Maybe wait till after 5 pm to try a glass, but your call.
