Zara has found itself in trouble yet again after they sold a T-shirt that makes light of a serious health issue.
The gluten-free diet may be trending, but for many it is so much more than just a diet choice; it is a serious sacrifice made by people who are suffering from a very painful, very serious illness.
So when clothing store chain Zara put the slogan “Are you gluten free” on a T-shirt, people were outraged.
In fact, Marta Casadesius was so outraged she created a Change.org petition to get Zara to remove the product from sale. And with 53,000 signatures, the battle was won.
“The truth is that I just wanted Zara to reflect on the message, I was trying to explain that perhaps it wasn’t the best way to make people aware of the illness,” she explained to The Local.
Zara have since apologised for any offence they may have caused saying,
“The T-shirt mentioned in this petition was pulled from our online store a few weeks ago now and we are currently confirming that it is not for sale in our stores either. We sincerely regret that this case might be interpreted as a trivialization of coeliac disease, the absolute opposite of our intentions.”
