There is something so effortless about a good quality cardigan. They’re cosy and comfortable so a cardigan should be a staple of any wardrobe – especially now that we are bearing the brunt of winter chills.
But is it possible to style a cardigan every day? Where do these knitted wonders slot into our wardrobe lineup of coats, trenches, jeans and boots? We spoke to The Iconic’s head of style, Nicole Adolphe, to get the lowdown on styling these winter warmers and how to elevate this classic style.
How do you style cardigans?
“I love layering a cardigan under a lighter, less warm jacket, like a trench coat,” says Nicole. “I’ll also wear a tie front cardigan (rather than button up) with a plain singlet underneath, denim jeans and sneakers for a weekend look. To elevate the look, I’d add a belt.”
With winter sending its icy winds and dreary days our way, layering is a great way to incorporate the cardigan into your outfit while providing an added layer of warmth.
“A turtle neck in a similar shade worn underneath a buttoned-up cardigan can add depth to your outfit,” says Nicole.
For a more office-ready styling, Nicole suggests, “instead of a blazer, [adding] a cardigan on top of a slim fit shirt or camisole with a bias cut midi skirt or trousers and a pointy toe heel.”
“Wearing something too bulky underneath is [a] common mistake. The texture of the knit is important if you’re looking for a cardigan to elevate your look, as something too textured might not work with your outfit if you plan on wearing it to the office,” she adds.
How do I choose a good cardigan?
“The length of the cardigan is important – go for a cut that sits on the hips rather than a long-line cardigan that tends to look more casual,” says Nicole.
It also helps to look at the materials if you are wanting something to feel more luxurious and elevated. Wools and cotton will help keep you warm and ensure your cardigan lasts for years to come.
On the hunt for the perfect cardi this season? Look no further, as below we are taking a look at the cardigans that have caught our eye that we will be shopping and adding to our wardrobes this year.
