As the 87th Academy Awards kick off this year, everyone will be admiring the celebrities as they walk the red carpet and laughing at awkward acceptance speeches, but what really goes on away from the limelight of centre stage?

We’ve crunched the numbers of what goes on behind the scenes: the gift bags, the food, the thousands of square metres of red carpet.

800 – The number of burgers (from hip LA burger joint In-N-Out Burger) served to celebrities at the Vanity Fair Oscars party.

750 – The number of limousines that transport the stars to and from the Oscars.

225 – The number of countries around the world that will tune in to the Oscars ceremony broadcast.

1,350 — The number of bottles of Champagne served at the Governor’s Ball preview ahead of the main ceremony.

10,000 — The number of colorful blooms imported the U.S, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Colombia to be used in the floral panels adorning the ballroom.

113 – Kilos of shrimp served in the main press room at the Loews Hollywood Hotel on Oscar night.

160,000 – The dollar value of the gift bags that all attendees receive (US $125K). In addition to luxury beauty products and $1,500 Mediterranean sea salts the attendees will this year receive a get a $US250 vibrator and even receive flights and accommodation for luxury tours of Tuscany and the Canadian Rockies. 3,700 – the square metres of red carpet stretching from Hollywood Boulevard to the entrance of the Dolby Theatre.

2,894 Number of total Oscar statuettes awarded from 1929 to 2011, in 1,853 categories, with over 50 larger than life Oscar statues lining the red carpet at the event.

19 – The record-breaking number of Oscar nominations received by Meryl Streep – more than any other Actor or Actress in Oscars history.

2 – The number of words in the shortest-ever Oscars acceptance speech – by Patty Duke in 1963 after winning Best Supporting Actress. Her words were simply, “Thank you.”

6,000 – The number of people who vote to select the nominees and winners – they form the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

5,000 – The number of mini chocolate Oscars created for the occasion.

38 million – The metres of copper wire used in the electrical and audio system.

11 – The highest number of Oscars won by a single film. Three movies have so far received this same distinction: “Ben-Hur” (1959), “Titanic” (1997), and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003).
