The Weekly’s Sheree Mutton caught up with Toni Maticevski backstage to find out the inspiration behind his latest collection.
Celebrities, bloggers and magazine editors turned out to see Toni Maticevski’s show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia – and the Australian couture king once again proved he is a master of design.
The futuristic collection of exquisitely crafted pieces featured florals and gold. “There’s no direct point of reference for this collection,” he tells The Weekly. “I’d liken it to a shadow of flashes and memories.”
Maticevski, who launched his label in 1999, admits his designs are often the result of “too many ideas”, but he says this collection is particularly “nostalgic”.
“I tried to keep it really paired back with the colour palette,” he says, adding that the florals are “highly contrasted with the gold.”
With celebrity fans including Jennifer Hawkins, Claudia Karvan, Rose Byrne and Jessica Mauboy, Maticevski has built up an impressive reputation both here and internationally.
Asked how he feels to have some of the biggest Australian stars wearing his designs regularly on the red carpet, Maticevski remains modest.
He says: “I don’t see them as celebrities. They’ve become my really close friends.”
