The Oscars are just around the corner and we can expect fabulous fashion, amazing memories, after party antics and of course some exceptional stars to shine as they scoop up that coveted golden statue.
To celebrate the upcoming the award show, let’s look back at the frocks, shocks and iconic moments that have occurred at Hollywood’s night of nights since 1929.
Who could forget the class of 1998’s cutest duo, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon who won The Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.
Things got steamy in 2003 when Adrien Brody planted a HUGE kiss on Halle Berry and can we take a moment for 2012’s smoulder moment of the year… of course we’re talking about Angelina Jolie and her now-infamous right leg.
Of course, the winners are the most important stars of the night so spare a thought for Jennifer Lawrence after she fell for her 2013 best actress award for Silver Linings Playbook.
Sit back and relive the very best moments from Hollywood’s glitziest award ceremony, The Oscars!
Angelina Jolie may have snagged her first Academy Award back in 1999 for her role in Girl, Interrupted (L) but the starlet most famously turned heads in 2013 thanks to her protruding right leg.
The pretty starlet, now 40, made her first Oscars appearance in 1986 when she was a sweet little 10-year-old girl hanging out with her dad, Jon Voight.
The evolution of Angelina: A regular on the best dressed list, the mother-of-six has transformed over the years from wild child, to vixen to humanitarian.
The Oscars may deliver some of the finest fashion, but the night is a celebration of the industry’s brightest stars. Breaking barriers, Halle Berry is the only African American actress to win the Best Actress trophy at the Academy Awards back in 2002 for her role in Monster’s Ball. “This moment is so much bigger than me. This is for every nameless, faceless woman of colour that now has a chance because this door has opened.” Meanwhile Hollywood sweetheart Gwyneth Paltrow made the auditorium sob with her emotional speech for her 1999 Best Actress win for her role in Shakespeare in Love.
Leading ladies: Kate Winslet bagged the gong for her role in 2009 The Reader. In 2006 Reese Witherspoon crossed the winners line for Walk the Line. Sandra Bullock bagged the big gong for the 2010 blockbuster The Blind Side.
In 1997, hearts went a-fluttering for two besties from Boston, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, following their win for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting. Both lads were in their mid-twenties and overwhelmed by the win. Our favourite part of their speech, “I just said to Matt, losing would suck and winning would be really scary. It’s really, really scary… Whoever we forgot we love you! And thank you so much to the city of Boston.” Watch their amazing speech in the video player next!
The Queen of winning is none other than Meryl Streep. In 2012 she accepted her third Oscar, 30 years since her last win for Sophie’s Choice (L).
Sometimes all you need at the Oscars is a huge dose of being fabulous… cue Beyonce. Bey ALWAYS delivers with amazing style.
Lady Gaga’s tribute to Julie Andrews and The Sound of Music back in 2015, will go down as one of the greatest performances of all time. “She hit it out of the ballpark. That’s a really wonderful thing to do too I think. As they say in Hollywood jargon, ‘She rates tall in my book,'” Julie admitted.
Pucker up! Adrien Brody planted a surprise kiss on Halle Berry following his 2003 win for Best Actor for The Pianist. He concluded the six-second smooch with the following declaration: “I bet they didn’t tell you that was in the gift bag.” One year later, Charlize Theron was locking lips with Adrien Brody following her win for Best Actress for Monster.
When music royalty collides with Hollywood royalty. What’s an award show without Madonna and Michael Jackson!? The pair were the surprise couple of the night at the 1991 show.
Old school glamour: Taking a step back in time for Audrey Hepburn and Julie Andrews. Both ladies scored gongs for Best Actress. In 1954 Audrey won for her performance in Roman Holiday. Over a decade later Julie won the award in 1965 thanks to a spoon full of sugar… her role in Mary Poppins.
Glitz and glamour, baby! Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey oozed style, class and sophistication.
Hollywood sweethearts Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have stood the test of time.
Meryl Streep may have been nominated for 19 Academy Awards in total, but it her relationship with hubby, Don Gummer, is what’s really award-worthy.
But alas, not all couples who walk the Oscars red carpet can stand the test of time. Matilda is the legacy that lives on from Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. While Gwyneth and Brad are best left in the past. We still dream about ’90s duo Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe and of course Hollywoo’ds glamour duo Nicole and Tom.
But the couple that shattered hearts the most? Jenny from the Block and her main squeeze, Ben Affleck. #RIPBENIFFER
JLo and Cameron Diaz broght the booty back in 2012.
Pretty in pink and pastels: Gwyneth Paltrow may not have scored a win since 1999, but she has been slaying the red carpet for the past two decades.
We don’t need to turn back time when we have Cher. The singer was slammed for this quirky ensemble in 1987 but a year later, she was still rocking a similar style and this time, with a sparkly gold statue in her hand for Moonstruck.
Who doesn’t love a kiss on the red carpet… Scarlett Johansson. We can’t all have the tender moments shared between Benedict Cumberbatch and wife Sophie… John Travolta’s strange lingering behind ScarJo in 2015 will go down as one of the more creepy moments.
A baby-faced Leo DiCaprio taught us that going alone is totally fine… Finger crossed he takes home one very gold statue this year.
All you need is your friends! Just ask Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. The duo put on a cosy display at the 2015 event.
Smile: Goldie and Liza Minnelli strike a pose at the 1979 Oscars.
Ahhh, the time Ellen broke the internet thanks to a slice of pizza and one very fab selfie back in 2014.
Jennifer Lawrence was the queen of drama following her adorable trip as she was en route to accepting her Best Actress gong in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook.
All that glitters: Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruiz ruffle the red carpet with shimmering delights.
Ladies in red: Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Heidi Klum and Kate Winslet have sizzled over the years.
Bold and beautiful: Michelle Williams, Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman and Amy Adams have been red carpet stand-outs.
Violet delight: Dreaming of perfection is Kerry Washington, Lupita Nyong’o and Zoe Saldana.
Ageless beauty: Kate Hudson continues to be flawless.
Seven years ago Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, his dad Kim spoke about the 2009 win and how Heath wasn’t there for it: “Bittersweet is probably the best way I can describe that night. It was only a year and a month since his passing. We hadn’t got our heads around the tragedy of losing him, but at the same time, he was receiving such accolades for what he knew was his best work.”
Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock are red carpet icons.
An Aussie dream: Our very own Cate Blanchett is always a vision! So here’s to 2016, maybe it be full of teary acceptance speeches!
