He was one of the most iconic fashion designers of our generation, dressing royalty, actresses and style icons alike. Originally born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he moved to the States and grew to fame in the 1960s when he dressed the likes of US First Lady Jackie Kennedy.
The news comes as something of a shock as he was seen on the runway presenting his collection at New York Fashion Week just last month. He was also diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and has battled it intermittently ever since.
The New York Times described the designer’s health earlier this month as “precarious”.
Oscar also designed and created the stunning bridal gown worn by the Amal Clooney to her Venetian wedding with George Clooney only weeks ago.
“He is the man every woman wants to hug!” Amal, 36, said of the famous fashion designer in her interview with Vogue at the time of the dress fitting.
