Back in her acting days and before Prince Harry stole her heart, Meghan Markle was a regular at glitzy Hollywood outings and red carpet events.

But now that she and her husband have stepped back from royal duties, the Duchess of Sussex is set to appear at one of the world’s avant-garde and fashion-forward red carpet events of the year- the 2020 Met Gala in New York City.

According to a report by The Sun, Meghan has been invited to the prestigious event alongside British Vogue editor Edward Enninful with whom she collaborated during her guest editing of the most recent September issue.

This year’s theme is Virginia Woolf’s Orlando – which sees its central character change sex and the mum-of-one will reportedly don a “glamorous androgynous” look.

“The Met Gala is for the Who’s Who of showbusiness,” the source said of the event, to be held on May 4th.

“Naturally Meghan was one of the first names on the guest list, and Edward’s team are excited that the two will go together.”

“Meghan is keen to step out occasionally without Harry so that she can establish herself once more in Hollywood.”

This is not the first time a member of the British royal family has attended the star-studded event, however.

In 2018, Princess Beatrice attended the Met Gala of which the year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination dressed in a deep purple Grecian goddess-inspired gown.

Meghan’s late mother-in-law Princess Diana also attended the glamorous event just weeks before her divorce from Prince Charles was finalised.

Donning a navy blue slip dress with lace trimmings from John Galliano’s first collection as the creative director of Dior, the lingerie-inspired dress was a far-cry from the conservative outfits Diana wore during her time as a full-time royal.

The last time we saw Duchess Meghan on a red carpet, she was attending the Lion King premiere in London with her husband, Prince Harry.

Dressed in a stunning black Jason Wu dress with sheer sleeves and satin detailing, Meghan paired the frock with a matching black clutch and chic sling-back heels, her hair slicked back in a bun.

The glamorous outing was one of the first following the birth of baby Archie, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made headlines when they mingled with power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z, the former of whom starred in the live-action remake.
