If there’s one thing that Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have in common, it would be fashion.
Indeed, just a glance at any fashion-related Pinterest board, Instagram style account or glossy magazine cover will prove the royal pair are undisputed style icons.
So what better way is there to bond than by coming together for a common passion?
Well, that’s what Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour certainly believes, it seems.
In a new interview with NBC‘s Jenna Bush Hager, the mag-legend, who could only be described as Queen Elizabeth’s equivalent in the fashion world, has revealed her ultimate dream couple to attend the annual Met Gala – and it’s a slight departure from the usual husband-wife-boyfriend-girlfriend combos.
“I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together,” Anna said.
“That would be my dream couple,” she added.
“They could leave their husbands at home. It’s the two of them I want.”
Hear hear, Anna!
We can’t help but envision the idea, especially after months of a rumoured feud between the pair bubbling at the surface.
Indeed in November last year, wild reports claimed that Meghan had reduced Kate to tears following a bridesmaid’s fitting with Princess Charlotte.
The eventual splitting of the Cambridge and the Sussex households in March 2019 only fuelled the rumours that there was trouble in paradise between the two sisters-in-law.
But with Wintour’s suggested new power couple, we can’t help but humour the fact that the tension might be dispelling.
And just imagine what they’d wear!
And while it would be a far fetched dream to see Meghan and Kate attend this year’s Met Gala, which incidentally takes place on May 6 and falls exactly when heavily pregnant Markle is expected to give birth, it wouldn’t be the first time a royal has attended the pinnacle fashion event.
In 1996, Princess Diana herself attended the glamorous soiree, while in 2018, Princess Beatrice was spotted on the red carpet.
And as expected, neither disappointed in the fashion stakes. Diana wore a divine Dior gown, created by John Galliano, which was part of his debut collection for the renowned fashion house.
Meanwhile Beatrice went for a slightly bolder look, wearing a bright purple dress with billowing sleeves and a dazzling headpiece, well aligned with the year’s theme of ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’.
Wintour is a known fan of the royals, having been snapped sitting front row beside the Queen at a London Fashion Week show in 2018.
And in January, Anna shared her personal thoughts on Meghan Markle as part of a new series on Vogue.com, where she said she thought Meghan was “amazing”.
Referencing heated reports at the time that some royal staff members were confused and upset that Meghan starts her day at 5am every morning, Anna said the Duchess was “a normal California girl, gets up early, does yoga and meditates.”
“And also [they’re upset that she] sent a lot of text messages. I mean what do they expect? That she was gonna send messages via pigeon?”

Anna has also spoke at length about Meghan and Kate’s sense of fashion, which she clearly admires.
“I think the two young duchesses that they have in Britain, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex, are going to keep the royal family afloat, quite frankly,” the fashion icon said in a previous interview.
And the style muse herself has even taken some inspiration from the royals, despite her signature bob and dark glasses being her unparalleled style over the years.
Speaking at the “Women in the World” Summit in April, the fashion maven referenced Meghan’s knack for pulling off a suit by commenting: “I’ve been thinking a lot about suits recently so … thank you to the Duchess of Sussex!”
We’ll keep our fingers crossed that the Met Gala 2020 might have a certain pair of royal Duchesses on the guest list…!
