Through a sewing school, on-site manufacturing and Sydney-based store opened in June, The Social Outfit offers training and experience for new migrants in clothing production, retail, and design.
Carla described being drawn to the role through her love of the industry and the cause promoted by the socially-minded enterprise.
“I love that The Social Outfit uses Fashion and design principles to work together with new migrants and refugees,” she said.
“Their programs are about combining creativity and on-‐the-‐job skills needed as people settle in Australia.”
The veteran designer added, “There’s a sense of celebration and collaboration in what that they do and I believe these are important values in a proudly multicultural Australia.”
The designer and businesswoman has also donated fabric from her luxury label, ahead of The Social Outfit’s inaugural collection to go on display at the Newtown Festival in November.
Long-honoured for contributions to public and creative life, Carla was awarded Designer of the Year in 1994, Australian Fashion Laureate in 2008 and made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2009. She also sits on the boards of SBS Television and the Australian Multicultural Foundation.
