Beginning the night with an impassioned opening speech, presenter Ashton Kutcher slammed Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies. The actor welcomed the audience and “everyone in airports that belong in my America!”

“You are a part of the fabric of who we are, and we love you, and we welcome you,” he continued as the crowd erupted in support.

The sentiment was echoed by the first winner of the night, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who also used her time on the stage to question Trump’s “un-American” stance.

“I want you all to know that I am the daughter of an immigrant,” the Veep actress began.

“My father fled religious persecution in Nazi-occupied France and I’m an American patriot and I love this country. Because I love this country, I am horrified by its blemishes and this immigrant ban is a blemish and it is un-American.”

“Ryan, you’re the best. That’s just the truth. No one can argue it,” Emma said.

“I feel insecure a lot of the time, genuinely. Feeling like I could deserve anything like this requires a bit of mental gymnastics for me,” Emma confessed.

Best Actor winner Denzel Washington also admitted his nerves. “We’re just actors. I’m famous and all that kind of stuff, but i have the same fear, opening night, first preview.”

“I’m a God-fearing man, I’m supposed to have faith, but I didn’t have faith. I’m getting choked up,” he confessed of not having pre-prepared his speech.
