With the US Open going on, I know I’m not the only one who’s becoming tennis-obsessed.

The good news is that it’s fairly easy to start playing and has an amazing welcoming community.

Starting a sport as an adult can be expensive, hard and intimidating to do as an adult.

Here are 6 reasons you should start playing tennis as an adult.

Tennis is one of those sports you can learn at any age!

You only need yourself

The best thing about tennis is it can be a one-person sport.

Sure, it’s better with two people but for practice, all you need is a wall.

Tennis is great because you can practice whenever you want and you don’t have to organise with a team.

It’s perfect because, unlike the gym when practising alone, you don’t have to worry about safety measures.

With the gym, when weights are involved, you usually need careful guidance to make sure you don’t get seriously injured.

Obviously, any physical movement can cause an injury but with tennis, when you first start there aren’t any serious injuries you can cause.

Learning resources are free

Unlike when I first started learning tennis, there are online instructors all over the internet.

You can easily learn the basics and when you start playing with others you’ll gain even more knowledge.

The best thing about this is you can learn to play and start playing with people but if you love it you can then invest into better tennis gear and possibly private lessons.

One-off payment

The best thing about tennis is it seems like it would be expensive but it’s so not true.

Tennis racquets can be found second-hand on many websites or bought new for a reasonable price, you don’t need a racquet like the pros.

If you know a family who play tennis, I can assure you that they would have so many old racquets lying around.

The community

The tennis community is surprisingly welcoming and they will teach you more than an instructor.

Now I’m not talking about the pros and playing in competitions but there are many groups you can join at local tennis clubs to meet new people.

Locals will have a tennis night weekly or monthly or if you don’t want to join you can always gather some of your friends to start playing tennis with you.

On court fashion

Okay, this one is a little selfish and may be specific to me.

Tennis fashion on and off the court can be so cute!

The preppy style is perfect but also practical and you can have fun with it.

Obviously, this isn’t exactly on theme for the article and you do not have to participate at all but as a fashion girl, I love it.

Learning something new is good for you

In my adult life, I sometimes forget to learn new things.

Obviously, I learn something new every day but more learning is just for my personal interest.

It is great for your mental health and how you learn new things in other aspects of life.
