The British singer has been given a doctorate by University Campus Suffolk (UCS), Ed’s hometown university, to thank him for his contribution to music.
“I’m really grateful to University Campus Suffolk and I’m honoured to receive this honorary degree,” says Ed.
“I’ve had an amazing year with my world tour and this makes it even better. Suffolk is very much where I call home and I’m always welcomed back and get so much support.”
The Thinking Out Loud singer added, “Receiving this recognition is a real privilege. UCS is at an exciting point in its development and I look forward to building links with UCS and its students in the months and years to come.”
Ed made graduates chuckle as he admitted that university wasn’t for everyone.
“I’m not really the poster boy for education and I don’t know if I can give advice on that side of things. I chose something I love and worked hard at it and didn’t really listen to anyone who told me I couldn’t do something,” Ed told the crowd which included his parents, John and Imogen. “There’s no key to success but the key to failure is trying to please everyone so make sure you please yourself. Choose something you love and work hard at it and you’ll be surprised how far you can get.”
The charming musician left school at 16 to pursue his music career, and has certainly come a long way!
These days, along with adding “doctor” to his already impressive CV, the 24-year-old sells millions of albums, tours the world, has won a bevy of prestigious awards, and casually duets with music royalty such as Beyonce and Stevie Wonder.
And, perhaps most awesomely of all, he was on Home and Away earlier this year. If you missed it, click here to check out the incredible scenes.
