The Government of Canada’s immigration website crashed on Tuesday night as the US election results begin to predict an imminent Donald Trump victory.
According to reports the site went down around 2:30 pm AEDT Wednesday with many suspecting that outage was due to Americans trying to leave the US – although that is just speculation.
Note: As this article goes to publish Trump leads the election with 244 electoral votes – he needs 270 to win and Hillary Clinton is trailing on 215.
In the lead up to the election many joked about a flux of Americans moving to Canada post election.
In February Canadian radio host Rob Calabrese, who broadcasts from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, set up a website called “Cape Breton If Donald Trump Wins“.
Calabrese said that the tiny island would make a lovely home for any Yanks who wanted to seek refuge.
A welcome message on the website reads.
“Hi Americans! Donald Trump may become the President of your country! If that happens, and you decide to get the hell out of there, might I suggest moving to Cape Breton Island!”

The website also laid out some arguments as to why Americans might want to pick up and move, explaining it was a place “where women can get abortions, Muslim people can roam freely, and the only ‘walls’ are holding up the roofs of our extremely affordable houses,” all references to Trump’s anti-abortion and anti-immigration policies.
The website even included some links on how to get the immigration process started, including the government website which is now down and out.
