Hollywood is a crazy place. Stars earn eye-watering sums of money that us normal folk can’t even imagine.
Fortunately, celebrities aren’t afraid to share it with the more vulnerable parts of society and we’ve gathered eight of their most impressive philanthropists.
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj has long been a vocal advocate for kids staying in school, especially young girls. Earlier this week, she backed her claims by paying over a dozen student’s school fees – as long as they showed her straight As.
Kylie Minogue
Kylie has pledged massive amounts of money to causes like breast cancer and AIDS. When our Kylie publicly announced that she had breast cancer, cancer screenings went up in UK by a third. “I know a lot of women went for screenings after my announcement,” Kylie says. “A lot of people came up to me and said I saved them. Of course I didn’t – but it made them go and get checked.”
Rihanna
Rihanna shines bright like a diamond when it comes to generosity. She was honoured with Harvard’s 2017 Humanitarian of the Year award because she built a state-of-the-art centre for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer back home in Barbados.
Angelina Jolie
Where to even begin on Angelina Jolie’s generosity? According to tax records, Angelina and Brad donated more than $8 million to charity in 2006 alone. She was awarded the Global Humanitarian Award for her significant work with UNHCR and refugees, donated $1 million to Doctors Without Borders after an earthquake in Haiti, and has contributed extensively to conservation work.
Chrissy Teigen
Outspoken Chrissy Teigen uses both her deep pockets and impressive platform to support causes close to her heart. After a deadly shooting at Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado she tweeted, “Every time sh-t like this happens, John and I immediately make another donation to planned parenthood” along with a link for others to donate.
Beyonce
Last year, Beyonce helped raise over $82,000 for the water crisis in Flint, Michigan and she recently announced a program to sponsor four scholarships for women studying the arts, music, literature or African-American studies.
Oprah
Oprah is synonymous with philanthropy. The talk-show deity has founded three of her own charities as well as supporting countless others, including ovarian cancer and research. On top of that, Oprah’s will pledges to donate 1 billion dollars to charity when she passes away.
Shailene Woodley
Shailene Woodley founded organisation All it Takes with her mum to promote youth empowerment and raised over $60,000 for the charity last year. The star also made headlines for her involvement in peaceful protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, reminding us contributing time is just as important as money.
