Three Victorians, three Queenslanders and two people in New South Wales have been diagnosed with hepatitis A. All reported eating 1kg packets of Nanna’s Frozen Mixed Berries before becoming ill.

Health authorities are expecting more infections to emerge as households across Australia empty their freezers of the berries.

Symptoms of the infection include fever, nausea, abdominal pain and yellow skin and eyes. Some people show no symptoms. The average incubation period for the virus is 28 days.

What should I do with my frozen berries?

The umbrella company Patties has asked consumers to return the berries to where they bought them for a full refund rather than throwing them away. Some lawyers have suggested holding onto them in order to be compensated.
