What have they done?! A plastic surgeon on celeb nip-tuck tales

We call on the expertise of a leading plastic surgeon to tell us exactly what he thinks these celebs have had tweaked, tightened and brightened.

A nip-tuck here, a cheek filler there, you can tell a lot from the fresh faces of the rich and, occasionally, outrageous.

And according to Dr. Robert Stephen Mulholland, medical director and physician owner SpaMedica Cosmetic Surgery and Infinite Vitality Clinics in Canada, “little tweaks done consistently means you never really age with a big change.” However, it’s the, err, not-so-little pinches and pulls that attract attention.

Here, Dr Mulholland gives us his diagnoses on what he thinks these “youthful-looking” celebs have had done in the doctor’s chair – and how much they’ve spent while they were there.

Lil Kim

Sometimes people become iconic for their unusual looks, and in the hip-hop world, big,big artificial implants and big buttocks have traditionally always been ‘in’.

Lil Kim has basically had transracial plastic obliteration. There’s nothing she hasn’t done: she’s had rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty [the surgical repair or reconstruction of the eyelid], brows, over-augmented mid-face and her body is completely different and over-augmented (like her giant butt). It’s a very extreme look.

I think her skin colour is down to make-up, but it’s certainly much lighter, so she might have gone down the hydroquinone route [a form of skin lightening] or had some bleaching.

Her nose has been altered irrevocably – really, the most shocking thing about her is the nose and the cheek… If she has cheek implants, she is stuck like that forever. But she’s also in a world where extreme is accepted. Extreme in the hip-hop world is anticipated and not frowned upon.

This would be hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of work.

These images of Lil’ Kim in 2003 (L) and in April, 2014 (R) highlight a stark contrast.

Jennifer Hawkins

Jen does appear to have augmented lips and rhinoplasty. She may have had her cheeks augmented and it looks like she has had a nose job.

This is $15,000-20,000, if she’s had her cheeks done. She still looks pretty, but she doesn’t look like the girl next door; she’s trying to look exotic.

Dr Mulholland feels like Jen has shaken off her girl-next-door guise for a more “exotic” look.

Courteney Cox

Her mid-face is way over injected and she just looks… different. But it’s not fair to compare her to her Friends photos in the nineties – that was, like, 25 years ago!

I think she has spent a good $25,000 to get to where she is today.

In all probability, these aren’t cheek implants; you don’t have cheek implants that big. These are injectable sub-tissue fillers. A plastic surgeon would maybe suggest to let it all deflate rather than using filler to create the tension. And just allow things to deflate.

One of the mistakes we talk about is over-augmenting the lips, cheeks or breasts, and she’s just over-augmented.

These pictures of Courteney were taken 20 years apart, and Dr Mulholland thinks she is now a little “over-augmented”.

Donatella Versace

This is a classic case of ‘botched’. This is a certain sense of beauty – over-pulled, over-augmented in the cheeks, that rhinoplasty…

It’s hard to fix this because only time will allow the over-pulled look to settle, as well as deflating the cheeks and lips. She’s over-pulled along the jawline, which makes her look like a Tim Burton character.

I think she’s probably spent $65,000-130,000 on her plastic surgery.

We caught up with Dr. Robert Stephen Mulholland while he was in Sydney for the Cynosure’s Advanced Symposium.

Dr Mulholland estimates that Donatella Versace, pictured in 1994 on the left and 2015 on the right, has spent up to $130,000 on plastic surgery.
