Weight Watchers earned the top spot in three categories including; ‘Best Weight Loss Diet’, ‘Best Commercial Diet Plan’ and ‘Easiest Diet to follow’ – for the fourth consecutive year since this category was added.
U.S News’ panel of health experts, including nutritionists and physicians specialising in diabetes, heart health and weight loss, scored each diet for short and long-term weight loss, ease of compliance, safety and nutrition.
The U.S government-endorsed DASH diet placed number one, with a score of 4.1 out of 5, Weight Watchers not far behind with a 3.9, and the Paleo diet sitting right down the bottom with a not-so-impressive score of 2.0.
It is stated on the U.S News and World Report website that “experts took issue with the [Paleo] diet on every measure. Regardless of the goal – weight loss, heart health or finding a diet that’s easy to follow – most experts concluded that it would be better for dieters to look elsewhere.”
DASH stands for ‘Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension’, but offers many additional health benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic, The DASH diet emphasizes portion size, eating a variety of foods and getting the right amount of nutrients.”
The consecutive top rankings Weight Watchers have seen over the years are said to be consistent with the clinical evidence of the effectiveness of the Weight Watchers approach, which is based on decades of research.
“We’re honoured to be recognised at the highest level for five straight years by the experts at U.S. News & World Report,” said Paul Schiffner, Weight Watchers Australasia Managing Director.
