Using the Internet stimulates your brain and may even help to counteract any age-related physiological changes that cause brain fog and poor memory, says a study from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The study, which was reported in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, found that online searching significantly enhanced brain circuitry and helped to prevent brain-cell shrinkage and loss.

Interestingly, the results were stronger for Internet use than for other better-known techniques for stimulating the brain, such as reading and doing crossword puzzles. Study author Dr Gary Small says this may be because Internet use requires decision-making and complex reasoning, such as making comparisons and using lateral thinking.
