For men, especially young men, going bald can create a lot of anxiety. Despite the hoard of hairless Hollywood hunks who put in a good fight for a bald head (we’re talking about you, Jason Statham), going bald can have a devastating impact on confidence and self-esteem. And, it’s not just men who suffer from baldness – women can lose significant amounts of hair too.
So when news drops that there might be a cure for baldness in the works, we’re ready to sit up and listen.
South Korean scientists have given balding men around the world a glimmer of hope with a new study which could pave the way for a cure for baldness.
During a recent study funded by the Korean Ministry of Science, a of team researchers created a game-changing substance called ‘CXXC-type zinc finger protein 5’ that’s been shown to promote hair growth in mice. The Metro reports, the promising substance disrupts a process within cells which controls the development of hair follicles and also the healing of wounds.
When tested on mice over a 28 day period, the CXXC protein promoted the growth of new follicles.
Lead researcher Kang-Yell Choi said: “We have found a protein that controls the hair growth and developed a new substance that promotes hair regeneration by controlling the function of the protein.”
“We expect that the newly developed substance will contribute to the development of a drug that not only treats hair loss but also regenerate damaged skin tissues.”
While it’s not yet time to toss your toupee (although that should have gotten the flick long ago!), we’re hopeful this pioneering research will continue until a safe cure is found for the millions of men and women who suffer from baldness.
Until then, let’s enjoy this gorgeous video of the rock and his puppy!
