Last week, Rosie O’Donnell shared a video which claimed Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron, might be autistic.
On Monday, November 21, the 54-year-old tweeted, “Barron Trump Autistic? If so — what an amazing opportunity to bring attention to the AUTISM epidemic.”
The tweet, which was met with harsh criticism, was attached to a YouTube video, compiled by James Hunter.
He put together a clip of Baron, which included footage from the presidential debates, the Republican National Convention and Trump’s acceptance speech from earlier this month, and points out behaviors that might be signs of autism.
Rosie has now come out to discuss why she put what some say an “unnecessary” spotlight on the ten-year-old.
Taking to her personal website, the mother revealed that her three-year-old daughter Dakota was diagnosed with high functioning autism, in September.
Autism has a range of spectrums, and is a lifelong developmental condition. It presents itself from early childhood and is characterised by how individuals communicate and forming relationships with other people along with their social interactions.
Rosie shared a poem to explain her views on the matter.
“As we try to grab onto / anything to keep us standing / the knowledge we r not alone / there r others living this too,” she penned.
“When i saw the anti bullying video / that mentioned Barron / it spoke to the symptoms many ASD kids have / it was educational and informational.”
Her poem continued, “1 in 55 kids is an epidemic / donald and i agree on that / and not much else,” she wrote.
“i feel he is a clear and present danger / but this autism subject — / had nothing to do with donald / though i admit / he does trigger me in all ways.”
Rosie and Donald have a very long history of feuding, dating back over a decade.
Shots were first fired when the stand-up made jokes about the billionaire’s Miss Universe pageant.
Donald has since gone on to call Rosie a “fat pig”, “slob” and “total degenerate.”
Despite their intolerance towards each other, Rosie admits she has “no ill will for his children” and even penned another poem about meeting Donald’s daughter Ivanka in a chance-meeting, describing the 35-year-old as “absurdly kind.”
