Researchers at the school of psychology at Flinders University in South Australia surveyed 351 women aged between 18 and 69 and found 17 per cent of them were interested in having labiaplasty – a common form of cosmetic surgery which alters female genitalia.
The study also found women who had greater exposure to images of women’s genitals were more likely to contemplate the surgery, while 13 per cent had received negative comments from their partners about the appearance of their private parts.
The study’s findings will be presented at the Appearance Matters conference in Bristol in England this week.
