A US company, RenovaCare, is pioneering a new piece of technology they think has the ability to turn the current treatments of severe burns, chronic and acute wounds, and scars, on its head.
The SkinGun, created by Jörg C. Gerlach from the University of Pittsburgh, sprays a liquid suspension made of a patient’s own stem cells onto the skin’s wounds or burnt surface area – prompting an organic growth and regeneration of new cells.
“Our goal is to work towards the use of our CellMist™ and SkinGun™ technologies to quickly isolate a patient’s own stem cells and gently spray them onto burns and wounds for rapid self-healing,” says Thomas Bold, President and CEO of RenovaCare, Inc.
“Today’s study results provide pre-clinical support for our methodology for first isolating keratinocytes from skin samples, and subsequently achieving even and gentle spray application without harming these powerful yet delicate cells.”
While previous methods of skin regeneration have in the past taken weeks, Gerlach’s technology takes only 90 minutes from start to finish.
In as little as a few short days, a patients’ skin can see unimaginable improvements, all the while avoiding invasive surgery, prolonged skin grafts and time in hospital.
While the treatment is not yet available for use, more than 12 patients have been successfully treated, one of which was healed completely of second degree burns in just four days.
