Australian shoppers may soon be faced with labels telling them exactly how long it will take to walk off their favourite treats.
A team of scientists from Edith Cowan University have proposed the new labelling system for “junk” food which involves “translating kilojoules into walking time”.
Under their recommendations, unhealthy foods will come with a label listing exactly how long it would take the average person to burn the kilojoules contained in the item.
A Tim Tam, for example, would take 24 minutes of walking to burn off, while a can of coke would take 41 minutes.
Sixty-three per cent of Australian adults and 25 percent of Australian children are currently overweight or obese.
