Child dies after drinking coconut drink

A 10-year-old child died after drinking a popular coconut drink.

The child from Melbourne – who cannot be named – went into anaphylactic shock after consuming a can of Greentime Natural Coconut Drink, a product imported from Taiwan and sold in most Australian states.

The Sun Herald reports the drink was recalled in December 2013, a month after the child’s death, but the cause of the recall was not known until now.

It is thought that the drink contained cow’s milk, despite it not being mentioned on the label. The child who died was severely allergic to cow’s milk.

The drink’s Sydney-based importer Narkena Pty Ltd pleaded guilty to three labelling charges last month and will be sentenced later this month.

Five coconut drinks have been recalled in the last four weeks, all because they contained undeclared cow’s milk.
