All my life, I hated going to the gym and exercising alone. I would purposely make excuses as to why I couldn’t workout. It got to the point where I convinced myself that I didn’t need to work out. Does this sound like you? Here are some great tips that I learnt to help motivate and encourage myself to workout.
Buy new gym gear
Love that leopard print sports bra? Buy it! Love those new Nike runners? Go for it! Having a fab and fresh new gym wardrobe will guarantee motivation.
You will simply want to step foot in that gym so you can wear those funky leopard tights.
So all you shopaholics out there – you have no excuse.
Reward yourself
A great way to get through a hard workout is by rewarding yourself. Now, we are not saying eating a whole block of chocolate, but do an activity that is relaxing and enjoyable to you.
This will motivate you to work hard and give you something to work towards. Personal trainer, Nancy Arango says “10 minutes in a steam room after a run is a great way to reward your body for all the hard work.” Besides relaxing your muscles, the steam will leave your skin feeling smooth and looking amazing. Score.
Mix it up
Ever get sick of doing the same workouts? The worst thing you can do at the gym is stick to the same routine, week after week.
If you alternate your workouts by week, you will avoid not returning to the gym. “A great tip to make sure you are changing your workouts is to keep a schedule or timetable which you can refer to. A visual reference will allow you to remember,” says Nancy.
Try group classes
Group classes are a great way to get you back in the gym. The energy levels in the classes are through the roof. The loud music blares through the speakers as the instructor shows you the correct technique.
The group motivate and encourage each other by singing and shouting positive feedback. You can also secretly compete with the people around you.
“A circuit style class is a great group activity because you can go at your own pace and it’s only a one minute per station class,” Nancy recommends.
Get yourself a gym buddy
If you haven’t already recruited someone, get onto it. A gym buddy is the easiest and most effective way to get you motivated for the gym.
A buddy will encourage and push you to get to where you want to be, especially on those days when you cannot think of anything worse.
You will also be responsible for motivating and encouraging your gym buddy – and let me tell you, the satisfaction of getting someone motivated is a great feeling.
