In news that has us shuddering into the next dimension, a UK ophthalmologist made a shocking discovery whilst carrying out a routine surgery on a patient’s eye.
Dr. Rupal Morjaria, a UK-based specialist, happened upon a “blueish mass” while a 67-year-old woman sat to have her cataract removed.
Upon closer inspection, the curious blob was found to be not one, not two, but 17 CONTACT LENSES “bound together by mucus”.
Shocked, Morjaria examined her patient under a microscope where a further 10 were found.
“None of us have ever seen this before. It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together,” the specialist trainee ophthalmologist told Optometry Today.
“We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.”
Though one might assume the mass to be extremely hindering, the woman, who had worn disposable contacts for the last four decades (!!!), assumed her irritation to be caused by old age and dryness.
Naturally, her surgery was postponed at the fear “she would have had a lot of bacteria around her conjunctiva,” Morjaria said.
The ophthalmologist speaks of this case in a bid to highlight the importance of responsible practice and hygiene for contact-wearers.
“In this day and age, when it is so easy to purchase contact lenses online, people become lax about having regular check-ups,” Morjaria says.
“Contact lenses are used all the time, but if they are not appropriately monitored we see people with serious eye infections that can cause them to lose their sight.”
Let this be a warning to us all.
