Fans of Star Wars are no strangers to spin-off series’, with the iconic franchise inspiring countless other movies and television shows.
The Acolyte is the latest show to be set in the Star Wars universe, and it takes place 100 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
The Acolyte is set during an era when a governing body called the High Republic is in charge. The series marks the earliest point in a live-action instalment of the Star Wars franchise – so far.
The synopsis reads: “A hundred years before the rise of the Empire, the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic have prospered for centuries without war.
“During this time, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a Jedi Master against a dangerous warrior from his past.”
The Acolyte stars Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games) as twins Osha and Mae Aniseya who were separated by a tragedy in their childhood, but reunite when they’re older as polar opposites of one another: one good and the other evil.
The show has been described by Lucasfilm as a “mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic.”
As mentioned, Amandla Stenberg spearheads The Acolyte cast, but she’s joined by an array of other actors too.
Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae and The Matrix’s Carrie-Anne Moss portray Jedi Masters who challenge Amandla’s Mae, who is a former padawan who strayed to the dark side of the force.
Also featuring in the cast are Joonas Suotamo, who portrays Chewbacca in the last three episodes of the original Star Wars movies, as a Wookiee Jedi Master, and Jodie-Turner Smith who is a coven leader named Mother Aniseya.
The Acolyte is the most recent Star Wars spin-off series to hit streaming, with the first two episodes becoming available for fans to watch on 4 June 2024.
The show can be streamed now on Disney Plus in Australia, with the remainder of the episodes being released on a weekly basis.
