Netflix shares the first look at The Crown’s new Prince Philip

Netflix has unveiled a first look at Tobias Menzies in the role of Prince Philip, showing fans what’s in store when The Crown returns in 2019.

Tobias, who has previously starred in Outlander, Game of Thrones, and Black Mirror, is taking over the role from Matt Smith in the third season of the hit drama.

Netflix shared a still of Tobias from the upcoming season, simply writing ‘Ambition’ in the caption.

Of his new role, Tobias says he is ‘thrilled.’

“I am thrilled to be joining the new cast of The Crown and to be working with Olivia Colman again. I look forward to becoming her ‘liege man of life and limb,'” he says in a statement.

The streaming service announced the esteemed actor would be starring in season three of The Crown earlier this year.

The entire main cast has been replaced by older actors, as the story of Queen Elizabeth II moves on chronologically. So far, we’ve scored looks at three of the other new cast members in character.

Olivia Colman is replacing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II.

Helena Bonham Carter is replacing Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret.

Ben Daniels is replacing Matthew Goode as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowden.

Marion Bailey will replace Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother, while Erin Doherty and Josh O’Connor will play the older versions of Princess Anne and Prince Charles.

Jason Watkins is set to appear as Prime Minister Harold Wilson, marking the PM’s debut in the series.

The third season, which is reportedly filming right now, will follow the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in the 1970s.

The Crown Season Three is set to air on Netflix in 2019.
