Receiving the first rose on night one in The Bachelor mansion is definitely something to brag about.
But for 31-year-old Michelle, Matty J’s decision came as a complete shock.
“I was definitely taken aback,” she tells TV WEEK.
So just how did this quiet police officer from South Australia manage to capture Matty’s attention and score herself the coveted rose? Find out below.
What was your first impression of Matty J?
He came off very polite, attentive and taller than what I thought! He has the ability to make you feel relaxed in his presence.
How would you describe the connection you guys had?
I would say it was mainly a playful connection with Matty.
How did you manage to borrow a police car for the night?
I had discussed my entrance with the producers and on the night – I was quite surprised that the vehicle looked almost identical to an actual Police car, lights and sirens to match!
What did you think of Matty J’s story about going to the toilet in public? Have you ever had to arrest someone for that reason?
I was taken back a little and was hoping he was referring to something other than being arrested! I found his story amusing and little insight into his personality. Working in the entertainment street of Adelaide, guys and even girls seem to have difficultly especially early hours of the morning on a weekend to find a toilet… But it rarely ends in an arrest.
How did you feel when you got the first rose?
I was definitely taken aback and it was very unexpected. Especially when he collected the rose and walked away from where I was sitting, only to make a loop and say my name.
Were you surprised?
This came as a complete surprise to me. I thought our first introduction was great and was quietly confident of not going home. Yet as the night progressed and Matty’s attention seemed to be everywhere else but on me, my confidence slowly diminished.
How did the other girls react?
The girls appeared to be happy for me, but I felt very alone in the lead up to the rose ceremony as the girls were feeling anxious and worried yet I had no care in the world at that stage.
Who would you say was the most shocked out of the girls and why?
I think Leah may have had some cards on herself that night, and when she didn’t get the first rose it knocked her back a little.
It appears you weren’t much of a fan of Jen. Why was that?
Jen Jen Jen…that first night she was on fire! During the night she would interrupt people, talk over the top of me, and flat out ignore me whenever I spoke! On the first night she came across as rude and selfish.
Which of the girls did you get along with?
After the first night, Jen came up to me off camera and straight out said, “Some girls are saying you think I’m a bitch and that you hate me, do you?” To which I gave my honest answer of, “You were rude, so yes I think you’re a bitch and I don’t like you”.
My honesty along with her blunt honesty was a match and from that moment we developed an amazing friendship. Sharlene I found to be a hoot, she would come up with some crazy predictions every day and I really enjoyed her laughter around the house. Aqua was my roommate for pre-filming so we had an instant connection from day one, she is the most beautiful soul I have come across.
What do your colleagues think about you being on the show?
I wouldn’t be surprised if this year’s Bachelor gets the most viewers due to everyone in SAPOL (South Australia Police) tuning in! They are extremely supportive and of course inquisitive, but I guess that comes with the nature of a cop.
