It’s the iconic comedy series that brought fits of laughter to the living rooms of Aussies everywhere and now, it’s making a triumphant return!
That’s right, Thank God You’re Here is returning to screens in 2023 for a brand-new bunch of comedians to go through the legendary blue door.
The original series aired across four seasons from 2006 – 2008 on Network 10 and then for a final season on Channel Nine in 2009 with stand-up comedian Shane Bourne hosting and Tom Gleisner (who currently hosts Have You Been Paying Attention on 10) judging.
And now, the format has been given a new lease of life, with a premiere date set for some time later this year.
Film and television production company Working Dog co-founder Michael Hirsch told TV Week ”Thank God a new generation is here!”
”We loved making Thank God You’re Here a few years ago, and feel the time is right for a new bunch of comedians to go through the blue door.”
In the original series run, the show paved the way for some of the biggest names in Australian comedy today, with appearances from the likes of Hamish Blake, Rebel Wilson, Ed Kavalee all taking their turn.
Casting is currently underway for a rotating ensemble of actors who have, above all else, excellent improvisation skills.
Stand-up comedian Celia Pacquola is set to host the revival, and with a slate of television appearances from the likes of Rove to Talkin’ Bout Your Generation, Spicks and Specks, Would I Lie to You? and more, we think she is perfect for the role.
”We have brought the show back for 2023 and beyond with a new host, the wonderful, multi-talented and funny Celia Pacquola along with new judges, new ensemble, and new guests,” Michael continued.
”We can’t wait to see this new crop of funny people bullshit their way out of sticky situations.”
In a statement of her own, new host Celia described the revival as ”thrilling.”
”I’m so excited Thank God You’re Here is coming back, and I’m thrilled to host because that means I’ll be in the best position to watch it. I can’t wait to send comedians through the big blue door and not have to go through it myself.”
Daniel Monaghan, Senior Vice President Content & Programming, Paramount ANZ also shared in the excitement, telling TV Week that the show had always held a ”special place” in the heart of Network 10.
”It was one of the most talked about shows on Australian television and was responsible for launching and celebrating a wealth of intelligent, lively and hilarious Australian talent.
”The show’s fast paced and quick-witted format resonates, captivates and engages viewers. We’re so excited for the show’s return to our screens and we can’t wait to see what we’re about to walk into next! To put it bluntly…thank God it’s back!”
