A new series is officially in the works that will centre on the Swedish Royal Family, specifically current monarch King Carl XVI Gustaf.

And, it’s already being dubbed the next The Crown.

According to Variety, Swedish broadcaster TV4 and pan-Nordic streaming service C More are developing the limited series which will run for just six episodes.

The series will cover King Carl XVI Gustaf‘s life from his childhood to his reign which began in 1973 when he was just 27-year-old.

“I’ve personally never been a fan of the monarchy, but I remember reading the treatment of six or seven pages while I was on a flight. As I was reading those pages, I started crying because it was so strong,” Josefine Tengblad, head of drama at TV4 and C More, told the publication.

“It’s a little bit like The King’s Speech in the way that it portrays someone who is being groomed to become someone he’s not and is having people trying to change him.”

The royal family haven’t been immune to their own scandals.

The Swedish Royal Family have seen their fair share of scandals through the years and it sounds as though they will almost definitely be touched on in the show.

Josefine added that the show at its core is about “human beings who have flaws that everyone can relate to and the challenges we all face to stay true to ourselves.”

The Crown has had viewers and royal fans hooked as they recount some of the biggest scandals surrounding the monarchy to make headlines throughout history, and we imagine this Swedish incarnation will be no different.

From raucous affairs to modern love stories the Swedish Royals are just as fascinating.

King Gustaf and Queen Silvia have been wed for over three decades.

Prince Carl Philip of Sweden married reality star Sofia Hellqvist, much to the alleged disapproval of his family.

The 33-year-old was best known as a model for men’s magazines and for her role in the reality TV series Paradise Hotel.

When asked if his family disapproved of his partner he retorted, “Absolutely not, not at all. My parents and my sisters were curious about her, open, and welcomed her with a big hug.”

We’re already imagining who will play each royal, specifically Prince Carl Phillip and Princess Sofia.

Meanwhile Princess Victoria of Sweden, who will one day be Queen, wed her personal trainer Daniel Westling.

Then there’s King Carl Gustaf himself who had a string of wild affairs exposed in 2010 thanks to the release of a shocking biographical book.

Looks like we have plenty to look forward to!
