1940s Australia. The world is at war. The men are away… and change is afoot.
SBS has dropped its first look at its new Original series, While The Men Are Away and we can’t stop watching!
In the eight-part dramedy series, Australia’s at war, so a lot of the men are away for a bit.
The witty revisionist dramedy series follows Frankie (Briganti’s Michela De Rossi), who’s left in charge of her suffering apple farm after her husband is sent to war (or was he?!)
Frankie enlists Gwen (Jagged Little Pill’s Max McKenna) and Esther (Bump’s Jana Zvedeniuk) – two Women’s Land Army recruits who undergo a heady course in race relations, rural politics, spirituality, farming and sex – oo-er.
Also featuring local Indigenous farmhand Kathleen (Phoebe Grainer) and certified coward Robert (Matt Testro), the show often (but not always) tells a wildly historically inaccurate tale about people who don’t normally hold the reins of power suddenly having them shoved in their hands and told to giddy the hell up.
And once they taste it, it’s impossible to go back.
The series also stars household names Gemma Ward (The Great Gatsby, Black Balloon), Sacha Horler (The Dressmaker, The Letdown) and Tara Morice (Dance Academy, Strictly Ballroom).
While The Men Are Away premieres on SBS and SBS On Demand at 8.30pm on Wednesday, September 27.
