Try to stay calm, Grey’s Anatomy fans! In a new interview, Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) revealed he’d love for Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang) to return to the hit medical drama in the future – and Sandra has admitted she might come back, too.
“I hope she will. I think it would be so much fun,” Kevin told Entertainment Tonight.
“It would open up so much again in the story and mix everything up. Owen, wherever he is in his life, would have incredible stories. She’s just such an amazing actor. I still miss her to this day.”
When the actor recently asked his former co-star about her interest in returning to Grey’s, Sandra reportedly replied, “Well maybe, maybe.”
“Even though I was part of it, Cristina and Owen [were my favourite couple on the show],” Kevin continued. “They were such a complex couple and really loved each other and were passionate. They really struggled through a lot.”
The star also revealed that he and Sandra talk “all the time” and the actress asks him about what his character is up to today.
“When [Owen] got married to [Amelia Shepherd], she got kind of jealous and was like, ‘No, that’s not right! That shouldn’t be the way. That’s not cool. That shouldn’t be what’s going on.'”
Though Sandra has no plans to return to Grey’s Anatomy at this time, fans of the long-running series will get a sweet surprise for the medical drama’s 300th episode. As the doctors at Grey Sloan treat patients from a roller coaster accident, they’re reminded of Cristina, Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight).
If you remember, Meredith’s BFF left after the show’s 10th season in May 2014. “It’s been a hard decision,” Sandra shared at the time. “But I felt like all the avenues that a character could possibly be explored… we have done.”

And even though we were sad to see Cristina go, the show sent her off with a very interesting storyline. During her exit episode, Cristina visited her ex-fiancé Preston Burke’s hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. While there, Preston (Isaiah Washington) offered her a job as head of the hospital so he could instead spend more time with his family. She took the job and farewelled her friends and family in Seattle.
Though Sandra may now be changing her tune regarding a Grey’s comeback, she previously admitted she didn’t think Cristina would ever make another appearance on the show. “At this point… No, I don’t think so,” she previously told Entertainment Weekly.
But, Sandra has praised her time on the medical drama in the past. “As an actor, as an artist, it’s a full life that one has. And as I look back to that time, which is extremely important and deeply meaningful to me, and it means a lot to me that a whole generation, a new generation of fans are discovering the show. So it means a lot.”
